Whether you're a first-time business or a brick-and-mortar retailer looking to add online sales, there's functionality in these plugins for everyone.

Setting up an eCommerce store in WordPress has never been easier, but choosing the right plugin is important. To help you decide, we've listed some of the top WordPress eCommerce plugins on the market.

1. WooCommerce

WooCommerce is the industry leader for breadth and flexibility of function. Whether you're just starting in the world of eCommerce or migrating your existing online store from another platform, WooCommerce makes for a solid option. It's loaded with functionality for businesses of all sizes – and it's brimming with customisation options.

You can build your online store within 30 minutes using the industry-specific themes provided – not to mention the thousands of third-party themes available. You can add multiple shipping rates to your checkout and choose from dozens of payment portals. And you can wow (and woo) customers with beautifully themed galleries for both digital and physical products.

As an open-source plugin, the platform is free out-the-box and comes with a plethora of upgrades to meet the evolving requirements of your business. Since WordPress and WooCommerce share the same developer, Automattic, many of their features are optimised to work harmoniously – so the computer will rarely say no.

The customisation potential is a developer's dream but may be overwhelming to those with less experience. However, you're unlikely to be left wanting with the many integrations it offers with third-party extensions. Stowsafe's warehouse management system integrates particularly well with Woocommerce, so if you're an existing customer or looking to partner with us, you're in safe hands.

2. BigCommerce for WordPress

BigCommerce is an eCommerce solution that's built with scalability in mind. That doesn't mean it won't suit smaller businesses, but that it has heaps of potential for growth within its engine.

As a "hosted" service, meaning it runs on its own servers, the big promise from BigCommerce is that its infrastructure can handle high volumes of products and visitors without compromising on speed, conversion and customer experience.

BigCommerce takes care of building your store but does allow techy users to edit the HTML and CSS. Its stores provide full integration with a variety of payment gateways in a range of currencies and have some of the most user-friendly checkout systems around.

The BigCommerce control panel lets you manage and monitor multiple WordPress sites – in addition to your Amazon or Instagram listings – all in one place, streamlining diverse incomes whilst synchronising your inventory across all platforms.

If you have a large inventory of products and complex business requirements, BigCommerce is ideal. However, the bigger your inventory, the more you pay in fees.

3. Ecwid

The most important thing to consider with Ecwid is its ease of use. Whether you're selling physical or digital products or offering subscriptions, all of Ecwid's powerful functionality is imported into WordPress to create a clean, lean, selling machine. In just a few simple steps, you can connect your WordPress, Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook and Amazon sales all through Ecwid's dashboard.

You'll benefit from regular stock updates from all your channels, real-time invoices and changes to orders, automatic tax calculations and support for most popular shipping carriers. The plugin also features advanced functions, like automated abandoned cart messages and easy marketing tools for advertising on Google and Facebook.

Bear in mind that many of these features are unlocked in Ecwid's paid versions. And while it's free to use initially, users are limited to 10 physical product listings only. Customisation isn't as advanced as the likes of WooCommerce and it's not as scalable as BigCommerce,  but it's just… simpler. Life is complicated enough, right?

4. Easy Digital Downloads

Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) prides itself on optimising the management of digital products. Installation is easy and once you've chosen your annual plan, you can immediately begin stocking those virtual shelves.

Plans start from $199.50 a year for the Personal tier, which includes support for most popular payment gateways – including Stripe and Paypal, free of charge – and the ability to sell subscriptions.

EDD may be limiting for users looking to add physical sales to their store, but if you're a contented denizen of the digital world, look no further.

5. Wp Easy Cart

Wp Easy Cart is an all-in-one eCommerce solution for small businesses that promises a hassle-free beeline to selling your products on WordPress.

The free version allows you to sell unlimited products with some basic (but useful) management tools. However, it charges a two per cent processing fee on all sales.

Alternatively, you could upgrade to the paid Professional and Premium editions. Do this, and you'll enjoy zero per cent processing fees and unlock powerful tools for growing your business. Whether you're selling physical or digital products, services, events or classes, it's all there.

The difference here is that everything is done in-house, including taxes, reports, analytics and any additional functionality you wish to integrate with your store. Its Premium edition comes with third-party extensions like Facebook and Instagram, ShipStation, Stamps and Groupon, all included in the licence fee. Wp Easy Cart is easily one of the more powerful plugins on the market  – at least if you're less concerned with endless customisation and more concerned with getting your store up and running.
